At Snap, we strive to provide a self service laundry that is always aligned with our motto of Fast, Easy, Clean. Our impact on the environment is also an important consideration for us, and we have made a number of decisions to minimise our carbon footprint and support eco friendly options at our laundry. Here’s how you can do environmentally friendly laundry at Snap:
Save Water. Water savings can be made by simply considering the choice of washing machine to do your laundry. One of the biggest advantages of front loader machines is that they use much less water than top loaders – up to 70% less. Our Dexter front loader washing machines are internationally renowned for their sump-free washer design and flexible water usage settings to reduce water consumption. Compared to domestic household machines, our Dexters use significantly less water.
Save Energy. Front loaders use a tumbling action to turn and wash clothes, so this uses less energy than the mechanical parts moving in a top loader. They are also designed to have higher spin speeds, resulting in less moisture in the clothes on completion. This shortens the energy and drying time required by the dryers when you need them – therefore reducing greenhouse gases.
Reduce Greenhouse Gases. Our express dryers have the reputation for delivering maximum energy efficiency by balancing heat input, tumble speed, air recirculation, and airflow through large-diameter cylinders. A standard load of washing can be dried in less than 30 minutes at the laundromat, compared to household dryers that can take well over an hour to dry and utilise so much energy.
Use Less Detergent. Too much detergent can make your clothes stiff, cause a build up of mould and mildew, and negatively impacts the environment. We made the decision to install an automatic dosing system so that high quality detergent is automatically injected into the machines with every wash. Only a small amount of good quality detergent is required to provide the perfect wash.
Avoid Dry Cleaning Chemicals. Washing and drying your large items – such as doonas, pillows & blankets – in our BIG machines means that you can avoid harsh dry cleaning chemicals. Our MAXI machine can wash up to 20 kilograms in just 25 minutes, using mild detergent for a brilliant clean.
We strive to create a bright, clean, safe & interesting environment that carefully considers its impact on the environment. Come and visit us, where you can support eco friendly laundry choices AND get your washing done in a snap.

Free detergent. We have installed an automatic dosing system so that the correct amount of detergent is automatically injected into all the front loader washing machines. That means you don’t need to lug your detergent with you! It also means that you won’t accidentally over-suds your washing, resulting in a poor quality wash. Less detergent is also better for the environment.
Save Time. Our Dexter front loader washing machines take only 25 minutes to complete their cycle, and have a huge bowl capacity compared to domestic machines. You can wash double loads, triple loads or up to 20 kilograms in our super Maxi washer. You can also bring their entire week’s washing, and load multiple washing machines at the same time.
Environmentally friendly. The environmentally friendly qualities of our laundromat are extremely important to us. The Dexter front loaders use significantly less water and energy; the Dexter dryers have the reputation for delivering maximum energy efficiency. They also require far less detergent, which is better for the environment.

The new school year for 2014 is rapidly approaching, with kids and parents preparing this year’s school books, stationary and most importantly the school uniforms!
Once the school term starts and the school uniforms are worn, I find that the laundry hamper quickly becomes overwhelmed with a pile of school dresses, skirts, blouses, shorts, sports uniform polos, socks, togs, cardigans etc etc.
Most of the school uniforms I’ve washed have care instructions that state “hand wash, drip dry”. I tend to think that many parents are like myself and simply do not have enough time, nor enough spare uniforms, to hand wash and drip dry only.
So, how do you wash school uniforms to get the best results, using a washing machine? Here are some of my tips:
Wash separately. For best results, wash uniforms separately with similar colours and textiles. At Snap Laundromat, you can load multiple washers simultaneously so that you can get many loads of washing done in just 25 minutes. This is a luxury that you cannot do at home with a single domestic machine.
Use mild detergent. Remember that less detergent is actually more! Many Australians over-suds their washing, making clothes stiff, and cause a build up of mould and mildew. At Snap, we installed an automatic dosing system that injects high quality detergent into the machines with every wash, so there is no need to add detergent. You only need a small amount of good quality detergent to experience the perfect wash for school uniforms.
Try cold water (gentle) wash. With uniforms, use a cold water / gentle wash for best results. The washing machines at Snap allow you to select your preferred water temperature.
Avoid fabric softeners and bleach; use natural alternatives instead. Why expose your children to the chemicals in softeners when natural alternatives exist? Instead, you can add the following to the funnel at the top of the washing machines at Snap:
Add a quarter cup of baking soda to the wash cycle to cleanse and soften the uniforms, or
Add a quarter cup of white, distilled vinegar to the last rinse cycle to naturally soften the uniforms and eliminate cling, or
Check out your local health food store for a natural fabric softener that uses a natural base like soy instead of chemicals.
Line or Tumble dry. In dry weather, hang the uniforms on a hanger and then line dry in a shady spot. Using a hanger means they don’t wrinkle as much. Do not make the mistake of line hanging uniforms in direct sunlight, as UV will deteriorate them very quickly. You can tumble dry on a low setting, but it’s important to use a low temperature and not to over dry them in a dryer so that the uniforms last longer. The dryers at Snap Laundromat are just $1 for 8 minutes drying time, and are express dryers, so your uniforms are ready in a Snap!
School holidays provide an opportunity for parents and children to see and do lots of exciting things together. The necessities of everyday life and household chores still continue, including the inevitable laundry chores. Encouraging my children to assist me with these chores is a great way to interact with them and still enjoy the holidays, while also teaching them important life skills.
Here are 10 ways your children can help you with the laundry these holidays, with your supervision:
Carry the laundry bag or laundry basket. Even young children can help with carrying the basket or bag of clothes to be washed. My kids help me by carrying our laundry bag from home to the car, from the car into the Laundromat, from the washers to the dryers – and then back home! The empty laundry basket inevitably then gets turned into a ‘boat’ or similar during play time at the laundry.
Loading clothes into the washing machine. If your kids can access the door to the washing machine, then they will love placing clothes into the machine. I set challenges for my daughters at the laundromat where they need to load darks in one machine, whites in one, linen/towels in another. I also like to educate them about the different types of fabric, and what makes some clothing items ‘delicate’, so should be washed separately and gently.
Pressing the machine buttons. Children love to press buttons, and this seems to be my children’s favourite part of helping with the laundry. With your supervision, they can select the correct water temperature, cycle and the all important ‘Start’ button.
Remind you of the remaining washing time. If your washing machine displays the remaining time, your kids will love to attempt to read this and make regular announcements. It’s a fun way for them to learn more about numbers and the meaning of time.
Tell you when the washing is complete. Kids seem more in tune to the beeps and noises of a washing machine. My daughter loves to announce to me that the washing is finished!
Moving clothes to the dryers. When I use the dryer, I ask my kids to help me take the washed clothes from the washing machines over to the dryers. We talk about the most efficient way to dry, based on what we have washed.
Hanging clothes on the air dryer. As long as they can reach, even young kids will enjoy hanging wet clothes to dry on an air dryer, especially their own clothes.
Sorting the dried clothes. If your kids enjoy puzzles, then they will enjoy sorting the clean clothes into the relevant piles for each family member. You’ll find this results in the inevitable comments and jokes about daddy’s undies or mummy’s bras.
Fun Folding. Folding the clothes is a great way to spend time and chat with your kids. I love the random conversations that we have while folding the clothes. It’s also an opportunity to teach them about how to fold their clothes neatly and how to look after them.
Putting their clothes away. My kids are responsible for putting their own clothes away in their wardrobes. I let then choose what goes where in their wardrobes. It’s a surprisingly easy way to ensure they keep their wardrobe neat and tidy, as they feel responsible for that part of their room.
My daughter suffers from sensitive skin allergies, so I am always on the lookout for clothing and products that are organic with gentle, hypoallergenic qualities. I love to see that bamboo blends are growing in popularity in Australia, offering a wide range of benefits and organic solutions for clothing, linen and towels.
In addition to its strength and softness, bamboo is an eco-friendly fibre with natural anti-bacterial qualities and gentle for those with sensitive skin. Not only that, bamboo is supremely soft and silky to the touch, it is breathable and thermo-regulating, and very absorbent. Its natural qualities do not irritate the sensitive skin on my daughter.
Bamboo and the environment
As most of us are all trying to consider the impact we have on the environment, the ‘eco advantages’ and environmental sustainability of bamboo textiles are also key reasons why I love using bamboo blends –
Sustainable. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Once harvested, bamboo can replenish itself within a year, and grows quickly. It is a naturally resilient plant, which does not need fertilisers to boost its growth, or pesticides since bamboo is naturally pest-resistant.
Eco Friendly. Bamboo requires no chemicals and very little water to grow, and absorbs more carbon dioxide from the air than either cotton or timber. It also releases more oxygen into the environment which improves air quality.
Biodegradable. Bamboo is 100% natural and biodegradable which gives conscientious consumers real peace of mind.
Bamboo at the laundry
So, how do you care for and launder clothing, linen and towels made from bamboo blends? I’ve found this to be really easy, especially at Snap Laundromat where our service provides the perfect wash for organic blends –
Use Mild detergent. Remember that less detergent is actually more! Many Australians over-suds their washing, making clothes stiff, and cause a build up of mould and mildew. At Snap, we installed an automatic dosing system which automatically injects high quality detergent into the machines with every wash. You only need a small amount of good quality detergent to experience the perfect wash.
Try Warm machine wash. Warm water helps break up any body oils absorbed during use, and also opens up the fibres so that they are absorbent during wear. Check the care instructions on your garments prior to washing, as some blends will prefer cold water wash. All our Dexter front loader washing machines at Snap allow you to select a cold or warm water wash, perfect for organic blends.
Avoid fabric softeners and bleach. Due to my daughter’s skin sensitivities, I long ago tossed out the fabric softener and bleach. I believe that there is no reason to expose yourself (or your natural textiles) to the chemicals in softeners when natural alternatives exist. Not only are they safer for you, your family and the environment, but they’re much more economical too. At Snap, you can add natural alternatives to your washing in the front loaders through the funnel at the top of each machine. You can –
Add a quarter cup of baking soda to wash cycle to soften fabric, or
Add a quarter cup of white vinegar to rinse to soften fabric and eliminate cling, or
Check out your local health food store for a natural fabric softener that uses a natural base like soy instead of chemicals.
Tumble dry. You can tumble dry bamboo clothing, linen and towels on a low setting. Tumble drying generally improves the absorbency of bamboo based towels, but it is important to not over dry them as this will make them feel harsh and crunchy. Our dryers at Snap allow for drying on a low setting, and you can open the dryers at any time during their cycle to check your garments.
When cared for correctly, bamboo based textiles will last for years to come, providing an excellent organic and durable alternative for clothing, bedding and towels.
We’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Thank you for all of the support we have received from the community and our customers since we renovated the laundromat on Whitmore Street this year. We hope you all enjoy some merry times with your family and friends.
Our laundry at Taringa remains open every day during the holidays, 24/7.
Snap Laundromat’s Christmas Lights display is officially part of Brisbane’s Annual 4KQ Christmas Lights Competition. Snap was announced by 4KQ as an official entrant in early December. Located at 86 Whitmore Street Taringa, the laundry’s wonderful display lights up Whitmore and Westerham Streets, and features Santa and his reindeers leaving the north pole on Christmas Eve.
Recently renovated this year, Snap’s owners Michelle & Ian, wanted to support the local neighbourhood and businesses with a memorable Christmas lights display.
“Our own children were so thrilled with our Christmas lights idea and entering the 4KQ competition, we knew that the surrounding neighbourhood would enjoy it too,” Michelle said.
“It’s great to give back to the community that has supported us through the renovations, and who continue to encourage and support our small business”.
The laundry’s Christmas lights display can be enjoyed every night. Place of Stones restaurant, next door to the Laundromat, serves delicious meals, deserts and coffees to enjoy too. Bring your family and visit Whitmore Street Taringa, and experience this festive time of year in Brisbane.
